Someone writing a fan-book on Harry Potter is NOT copying your stories.

1. Numerous authors have had commentaries and geeky fan books written as spin offs. What makes you so special?
2. I've seen a few His Dark Materials (far superior to HP) fan/commentary books, and I haven't heard about Philip Pullman suing anyone.
3. Every author is inspired by stuff other authors write. Some genres even have common themes (parallel universes, dystopian futures, etc).

What are you really worried about, JK? Your literary creation, or your royalties?

depends on whether they really are stealing her work. after all, however derivative the HP books are, she did create all those characters. however rich she might be it is still her baby so to speak. i understand your point but perhaps she has one too. the lexicon writer could just write his/her own stories if they have the talent.

anyway, more importantly, should arsene give the squad players a chance to shine vs reading or should he go all guns blazing to try and get 2nd?

  The way I understood it, the books just a fan encyclopedia. And there are websites dedicated to writings inspired by HP, so what's the difference?
  
  I hope he uses the best available team (which at the moment will include some squad players, no doubt), and restores some pride. Just as long as Hoyte or Blunderos aren't in the team!

        I understand intellectual copyright, especially if it's copied word for word.
        
        But, I've seen fan books written about His Dark Materials - by writers who are not Philip Pullman - but I haven't heard of him complaining.

  I've been inspired (and so have others) by HDM, and that cannot be a bad thing to be inspired by an author's work. Anyway, there are plenty of websites dedicated to HDM and HP information, but no one complains about them.

I think the point is that someone else is trying to make money out of her 'invention' as it were which, in some respects, I understand.

It's kind of like people trying to make money out of franchises (Coca Cola, etc) w/o permission just to make money. I don't blame her.
